A Man Had a Stroke. Three Months Later His Tongue Turned 'Hairy' And Dark

(Jayasree et al., JAMA Dermatology, 2022)

The man had suffered a stroke within the past three months and was on a diet, doctors said in a statement on Wednesday. A thick layer covers most of the tongue for about two weeks, leaving the sides and middle.

Doctors diagnosed it as a tongue of black hair or lingua villosa nigra, a malignant tumor according to the American Academy of Oral Medicine. Hair loss occurs in about 13% of the population, the Academy said.

Indian dermatologists say that black hair tongue is more common in people who eat pure foods and is caused by lack of damage or itching of the tongue resulting in high protein content called keratin. Thus, the conical process that covers the tongue, filiform papillae, elongates and forms hairs on the top of the tongue.

Other predispositions include: poor oral hygiene, smoking, oxidative oral hygiene, oral hygiene
, excessive consumption of coffee or tea, HIV or other debilitating diseases, such as leukemia.

It can occur at any age, but it occurs more frequently in older people, according to the National Institutes of Health.

A black-haired tongue may appear brown, yellow, or green according to the NIH, depending on the bacteria and pathogens that may be growing at the treatment site, as well as other anaerobic bacteria that ferment food in the nipple. . It is an anaerobic disease that causes the tongue to appear black. In general, black hair extensions are best done by brushing your tongue with a toothbrush or using a tongue scraper.

In this patient case, "adequate cleaning" resolves the pain after 20 days, doctors say.
